Gluten-Free Resolutions in the New Year!

Happy 2013 scoopers! For me 2012 was a great year - and all about overcoming challenges. Now, I feel that the best if yet to come! Even though I admit to be a little superstitious about the number "13"- I'm ready to turn that around and make this a lucky year!

Here are 3 simple changes I've recently made. Try one or all of them - and see if they make a positive difference in your health. Cheers to a happy 2013 - let's make it our healthiest yet!

1. Get more FIBER in your diet. One thing I didn't realize when I first started a Gluten-Free Diet was that most of the GF grain products contain MUCH LESS fiber than wheat based products. So it's even more important for Celiacs and all those on a GF diet to add raw veggies, fruits, and high-fiber foods like quinoa and brown rice to our diets. One of my favorite ways to get an extra boost of fiber is by adding a tablespoon of golden flaxseed meal into my protein shake in the morning. I also love a bowl of raspberries and organic whipped cream for a quick & easy dessert. Add more fiber to each meal with a handful of seeds, nuts, or a small portion of steamed veggies. It's recommended that adults get 25-35 grams per day.

2. Eat more PROTEIN! Starting your day with 20-30 grams of protein will help to jump-start your metabolism and keep your blood sugar stable all day long. Some of my favorite high-protein breakfasts are scrambled eggs with B-vitamin flakes and my Berry-Delicious protein shake. Make sure to add more protein to your lunch and dinner, too. If you're making brown rice pasta - add a little shrimp. Substitute sour cream with plain greek yogurt in your Mexican dishes or on your baked potato. Indulge in an occasional steak or even some bacon!

3. Get moving - first thing in the morning! In today's world it's so easy for us to just sit all day. Try to sneak in a quick run or walk when you first wake up. Do some jumping jacks and sit ups - anything to get you moving! I've found that when I get in an early morning workout- even if it's short - I tend to feel more awake and ready for the day. I also feel a better sense of well being and in a better mood. Going outside can be even more helpful - as you'll soak up a little Vitamin D (which we all need) and the natural light will help to regulate your sleep cycle.
