Just Say NO to GMOs!

GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms) are present in about 90% of the SOY, CORN, COTTONSEED, and CANOLA grown in the US. What does this mean? It means that a lot of the food we eat is not natural... it's been genetically changed... and is actually changing our digestive systems... and NOT in a good way! I have always wondered why on top of Gluten... I cannot tolerate SOY... and as I've been reading up on this, have realized that it is probably due to the fact that SOY has been genetically modified!! The rise in soy allergies has dramatically increased in the past 10 years.... about the same amount of time these GMO's have been around. So.... let's get the word out and JUST SAY NO TO GMOs!

Hundreds of health food stores around the nation sell NON-GMO products. The "Non-GMO Project" is helping to spread the word about GMOs... as they believe that everyone deserves to know whether they are consuming GMO products or not! Check out this website.... get educated about GMOs... and do whatever YOU can to spread the word too.  Why GMOs are NO GOOD
*They are a THREAT to human fertility!! (Rats that were fed GMOs were infertile by the 3rd generation! Some even died after ingesting GM SOY..... Yikes!)
*They are one of the main causes of rising food allergies.
* GM dairy products cause increased risk of prostate, breast, colon, and lung cancer.
*GM corn may impair kidney and liver function. (according to a study released by the International Journal of Biological Science and reported in the Huffington Post)
*The 2008 documentary "Food, Inc." blamed GMOs for unhealthy animals, human obesity and an upswing in diabetes, and the spread of virulent strains of E. coli bacteria (for example, at Jack-in-the-Box restaurants in 1993) with resultant deaths in humans. The documentary "Super Size Me" (2004) similarly blamed GMOs for human obesity and higher incidence of diabetes among children and Type 2 adult-onset diabetes.

So, how can you start avoiding GMOs today?  Here are my suggestions:

*Avoid any product with the top 4 sources of GMOs: SOY, CORN, CANOLA, and COTTONSEED. Look for organic substitutes for things like corn tortilla chips.... they are out there, you just have to search for them! 

*Make sure you are shopping at grocery stores that are GMO-FREE. (Trader Joes, for example, removed all GMOs from their stores a few years back...) Whole Foods Market is also another one of my favorite places to shop. Their 365 brand products are ALL GMO free. Amy's Kitchen also believes in being GMO-free. (I absolutely LOVE their frozen dinners, soups, and gluten-free burritos.) You can find their products at super Wal-Marts and many health food stores.

*Purchase foods from your local farmers markets!! Not only will you be supporting local produce... but you'll be steering clear of GMOs hidden in many grocery stores.

*Get educated!! There is still a lot of research being done on GMOs... hopefully soon we will have labels on food with GMOs...until then, read up on the latest research, and do what you can to support the Non-GMO project!
